Happy Monday Morning!

(The above actually isn’t from this morning, but it paints the picture well enough.)

Let’s talk about breakfast.

Okay, I don’t really know what I was going to say. I’ve been trying to get up early the last week or so and to get my “to-do’s” done early in the day. Part of that is because we used up all our Dish internet in the first two weeks of July, and now only have fast internet between 2am-8am. Handy, I know.
Anyway, breakfast. A couple of the other blogs I follow happened to be talking about breakfast today, a majority mentioning the fact that because it’s super hot where they live, they’re in the mood for cold oats, yogurt, etc. I didn’t realize that cool mornings were something I should be thankful for, but I totally am today. I rolled out of bed after my 6:00 alarm (and 6:10 alarm…), wrapped up in a blanket, donned my puffy blue slippers,

and whipped up a hot breakfast to enjoy this 50º foggy morning. Cheers to California diurnal variation!

I basically have two breakfasts that I alternate between, depending on my hunger level. My go-to breakfast #1 lately is oatmeal, whose recipe goes something like this:

1/2 cup rolled oats
3/4 cup water (just a little bit more than the oats)
a pinch of salt

which I put into a saucepan and give a quick stir. With our awesome gas range, it takes about 3 minutes before the oats start to bubble, at which point I add bits and bobs of other goodies. This morning it was about 1/8 cup 2% milk, a Tablespoon of brown sugar, a teaspoon of cinnamon, all still while the oats are cooking for about another 30 seconds (I’m not a very patient cook).

I then put all that in a bowl and top with a Tablespoon of peanut butter or, if I’m feeling fancy, almond butter, and sometimes 1/2 a banana. Voila!

(I don’t have a picture because I ate it too fast).

That oatmeal + a French press of coffee = perfect warm morning for moi.

Go-to breakfast #2 usually comes with a morning when I’m not so hungry, but know I should still eat some protein or risk being super hungry an hour later. I fry an egg over-easy and serve with a slice of toast (Saralee 45 calorie is the best) with one of the homemade jams filling my cupboard – my momma and mother-in-law sure do know how to take care of us. 🙂

Left = Rhubarb Cherry Jam from Cody’s mom, Angela; Right = Strawberry (Rhubarb?) Jam from my momma, Lisa

I usually make an Elephant of green tea with that breakfast, as pictured above. Alfie the Elephant loves to take part in my breakfast time (Sarah – awesome elephant-themed gift idea, as always).

Other Things Happening as of late:

1. Taking a million pictures of Kinster, per usual:

2. Taking in the beauty of the vineyards that we drive by on a daily basis:

3. Taking time to stop and smell the roses, and by smell, I mean taste, and by roses, I mean grapes:

4. Taking walks around our neighborhood and getting acquainted with our neighbors, the redwoods:

5. Talking about how many uses there are for the verb “to take” that don’t mean “to physically remove from another place, thing, or person and to have for oneself.” Interesting, no?

In conclusion, Happy Monday to all. I’ll try to make it not so long before stopping in again. 😀
